- 🔩 Sections that flex noticeably by hand before assembly
- ⚠️ Joints made by overlapping and screwing, with no positive location

What an engineered frame typically is
- 💪 Heavier gauge extrusion or hot-dip galvanized steel with a thicker zinc layer
- 🧭 Profiles designed to locate into each other, so the structure squares itself as you build
- 🔩 Bolted connections at the load points rather than self-tappers into thin metal
- 🛡️ Corrosion treatment that survives the coastal or road-salt case, not just the mild one
The consequence shows up in one place: wind. A greenhouse is a large, light, hollow box, and wind is the load that removes them from yards. Engineered structures publish a rating because they have been designed against a number. Budget kits usually publish nothing, which is itself the answer. 💨
🪟 2. The glazing, where the difference is more subtle than people think
This is where the marketing gets noisy, so let us be precise. 🧊
Cheap structures glaze in one of three ways: thin single-skin polycarbonate around 4 mm, thin twin-wall, or in the worst case a rigid PVC or acrylic sheet. Engineered structures use thicker twin-wall or multi-wall polycarbonate, or tempered safety glass, depending on which family they belong to.
The differences that actually matter:
- 🌞 UV protection layer. Quality polycarbonate is co-extruded with a UV-blocking layer on the outer face. Without it, panels haze and embrittle in a handful of seasons rather than lasting well over a decade. This is the single biggest quality variable in polycarbonate and it is invisible on a photograph.
- 🪨 Tempering. Tempered glass breaks into blunt fragments rather than shards. Horticultural float glass is cheaper and does not. In a yard used by children or dogs, that is not a preference, it is a safety decision.
- 📐 Panel thickness and edge sealing. Thicker twin-wall insulates better and resists hail. Sealed flutes stop dust and algae colonizing the channels, which is what makes old cheap panels look green from the inside.
Note what is not on that list: which glazing family is better. Polycarbonate and glass are two tools for two jobs, and both exist at budget and engineered quality. 🔩 3. Fasteners, clips and seals, the cheapest thing to cut
Nobody photographs the fasteners, which is exactly why they get cut. And they are the components that fail first. 🔩
- ❌ Budget: plain steel screws that bleed rust down the frame, plastic clips that go brittle after two summers of UV, foam tape seals that compress and stop sealing.
- ✅ Engineered: stainless or properly plated fasteners, UV-stabilized or metal glazing clips, EPDM or silicone gaskets that stay elastic.
A structure whose clips have perished is not broken, but it is leaking, rattling and shedding panels in wind. Replacing a hundred small parts is tedious enough that most people simply live with a degraded greenhouse instead. 😩
📊 4. Ratings and documentation, which are the honest test
Here is the shortcut we would give anyone comparing two listings. Ignore the adjectives and look for numbers. 📄
An engineered greenhouse publishes:
- 💨 A wind rating in mph
- 🌨️ A snow load figure
- 📏 Exact footprint, ridge height, eave height and floor area
- 🪟 Glazing thickness and type, per surface
- 🧾 A written warranty with a stated term and stated exclusions
A budget kit publishes "heavy duty", "weather resistant" and a photograph taken in perfect summer light. Neither adjective means anything, and their absence of numbers is deliberate rather than accidental. 🚩
💡 This test costs nothing and it separates the two categories faster than any spec comparison. If a seller will not tell you the wind rating, they have told you the wind rating.
🔨 5. Tolerances, or why the same job takes two days or five
This is the premium nobody advertises and everyone feels. 🧰
Precisely made parts arrive with holes that line up, profiles that seat, and a manual whose step 14 matches the bag labeled 14. Loosely made parts arrive with holes drilled a few millimeters out, which does not sound like much until it has compounded across forty joints and the door will not close square.
- ⏱️ Engineered kit, two people, prepared base: two to three days, no drama.
- ⏱️ Budget kit, same two people: often four to five days, with drilling out, packing shims and at least one call to a support line.
To be clear about our own claim: a greenhouse is never a quick-and-easy afternoon build, at any price. Two to three days with two people is the honest figure for a well made kit, and nobody should be sold anything faster. 🧑🤝🧑
🛡️ 6. Warranty and spares, which are the same thing
A warranty is only as useful as the company still existing and still stocking the part in year seven. 📅
Two questions worth asking before you buy anything, at any price point:
- ❓ How long is the warranty and what does it exclude? Storm damage, glazing and consumable parts are the usual exclusions and the usual surprise.
- ❓ Can I buy a single replacement panel, clip or door hinge in five years? If the answer is no, the structure is disposable regardless of what the warranty says.

- 📦 Elaborate packaging
- 🏗️ Custom or made-to-measure work, which costs a lot and matters only if you actually need a non-standard size
The useful money is spent on frame gauge, glazing quality, fasteners, tolerances and support. Above that line, you are buying preferences, which is a perfectly legitimate thing to buy as long as you know that is what you are doing. 🏛️
✅ When cheap is genuinely the right call
We sell engineered structures, so treat this section as the one where we argue against ourselves. There are real cases for a budget kit: 🤝
- 🧪 You are testing whether you will use a greenhouse at all. A season with a cheap structure is a cheap way to learn that you will not, or that you want it somewhere else.
- 📦 You need something for a defined short period. A rental, a house you plan to leave in two years, a stopgap.
- 🌿 A cold frame or a small hoop tunnel would actually solve your problem. Some people want season extension for seedlings, not a building. That costs a fraction of either option.
- 💰 The alternative is nothing. A modest greenhouse used enthusiastically beats a perfect one you postpone for four years.

- 5️⃣ Can you buy a single spare part? Look for a parts page, not a promise.
Any listing that passes all five is worth comparing on price. Any listing that fails three of them is not really in the same category, whatever the photograph suggests. 📷

How long does a cheap greenhouse actually last?
