Tempered glass is not fragile either, and it is what serious glass greenhouses use. It resists far more than the old horticultural glass your grandparents lost every winter. But under a direct hit from a branch or a golf ball it will break, and a broken pane is a replacement job. 🪟

Polycarbonate ages. Quality panels carry a co-extruded UV layer on the outer face, and while that layer holds, the panel stays clear. Two things are worth being precise about, because the internet is not:
